African Music

African Music is chiefly vocal. There are many kinds of songs, with different meters (rhythms) for soloists and choruses. African music is polyrhythmic. That is different instruments played in different rhythms at the same time. African dancing is also polyrhythmic. Dancers move different parts of their bodies in time with different instruments in the orchestra. Most African music is played on drums, but flutes, bells, Sekere, woodwinds and xylophones are also used.
